Winter Skills Day Courses 2017

We are delighted to announce our new programme of day winter skills courses for walkers in the Lake District for 2017. Book online today.

An opportunity to spend a day on Helvellyn with Fell Top Assessor Graham Uney as he climbs to the summit of the mountain to take snow and weather readings for Lake District Weatherline. For each event Graham will guide you on a different route on the mountain, chosen according to snow and weather conditions and the ability of the group members, and will teach you the basic skills of snowcraft you need for safe winter walking in the fells and mountains of the UK. The day promises to be strenuous, informative, challenging, but also a lot of fun. Book now.

About the course

A Lake District taster day for anyone who wants to learn the basics of how to use an ice axe and crampons for winter walking. Lake District Fell Top Assessor, Graham Uney, will guide you through the basic techniques required for safe winter walking in the fells.

Essential

We provide all the technical gear for the day, but you are expected to have your own personal clothing and equipment. You will need*:

  • Full waterproofs (including trousers and gaitors)
  • Warm layers including a spare fleece/down jacket
  • Woolly hat and gloves, ski goggles, head torch and spare batteries
  • Rucksack (at least 30L), and winter walking boots (must be rated B1 or B2 to take crampons)
  • Packed lunch including a hot drink and spare snacks
  • You will also need an ice axe and crampons (rated at least C1 – not ‘spikes’) - Graham Uney, your instructor, has a limited stock of ice axes and crampons for hire. These cost £10 for an axe and £10 for a pair of crampons per day. These must be booked in advance, so please email Graham if you want to hire these items grahamuney@gmail.com  

*The instructor reserves the right to refuse to take anyone on the day who does not have the correct personal clothing and boots. No jeans please, and avoid cotton baselayers.

The courses are run by Graham Uney who will be your lead instructor each day. Graham is the Fell Top Assessor on Helvellyn for Lake District Weatherline, so he knows the winter conditions out on the fells as well as anyone.

*We reserve the right to refuse participation if it is considered a person's conduct puts either themselves or others in danger. We accept no responsibility for personal property that may be lost or damaged during the event.
Medical conditions
*The event leader needs to determine, as far as possible, that participants are physically and mentally fit for that particular event.
*By attending the event you accept that  the leader will ask you to declare, in confidence, any relevant medical information that may affect your performance.

*Maximum numbers apply to all events for health and safety reasons and group enjoyment.

*You will be issued with a booking reference which you will need to present to the leader on the day.

Cancellation policy


Cancellation by you
A full refund or transfer onto another suitable Winter Skills course in 2017 will be given up to 7 days before the event.

Cancellation by us
If we need to cancel the event we will offer you a full refund (if applicable) or with your consent, transfer your booking to another Winter Skills Course in 2017.

In the event of adverse weather conditions

Most events have alternative routes in the event of adverse weather. The leader will make a decision on the day as to whether the event will proceed or an alternative be offered. His decision is final.
